POWER DRESSING

With more and more women climbing up the corporate ladder and assuming up leadership positions, now is a good time to focus on your attire. Not because your current one is bad but with some styling tips your next purchase can help you in being taken seriously. Power Dressing means to dress up in a style intended to show that you are a leader/ person who holds an important position in a corporate, business, politics or government.

The adage ‘Great leaders have Broad Shoulders’ have meanings both metaphoric and literal. Shouldering responsibilities and holding oneself accountable for the outcome is an invaluable trait of a good leader; that is the metaphoric meaning of the saying. Coming to the literal meaning, studies suggest physical attributes like being tall, having a deep voice and broad shoulders contribute to people subconsciously trusting and accepting a person as their leader.

While the metaphoric ‘broad shoulders’ is an inside job, the physical broad shoulders can be achieved with the help of your stylist – Shrinika Neethi … that is me btw.

Let us start with styling the popular choice for Indian office wear – Kurta and Dupatta.

A chiffon dupatta/ chunni makes the ensemble look beautiful, it is easy to maintain and easier on the pockets but what it does not give you is broad shoulders. On the contrary, it may even make them look droopy, which is the opposite of what we are trying to achieve here.

I suggest you invest in a good DUPATTA

1.      Cotton, Tusser silk or Organza – the hard work of starching the dupattas will be worth the effort.

2.      In a dark color – as it will highlight your face.

3.      Plain or monochrome prints – too many colors or bright prints will distract the focus away from your face or what you are saying.

Seen in the picture is a midnight blue tusser dupatta from Composium. Pleated and pinned, it gives the illusion of broad shoulders. The natural sheen of silk adds the right measure of richness. Perfect choice to slay that deal/presentation/meeting which you have worked hard for.

Smart work

1.      If you are not yet ready to buy a pure cotton or silk, try an artificial one first. Although it won’t have the same grace as the original ones, the stiffness of the fabric will be easier to achieve with less effort.

2.      Buy in plain colors and let the colors match with the sets that you already have, that way you can wear one dupatta with a few sets and each of your set will have 2 dupattas - the dupatta that came with it and the new plain one that goes with it.
